I applied it using a dry brush technique where you get a little paint on the brush then dab most of it off into a paper towel or rag, then randomly lightly brush it on the surface. I then used a paper towel and a water bottle to blend in the gray giving a very subtle blend of colors. I had some left over Fusion Mineral paint in the color of Champlain and I mixed this in a 4 to 1 ratio; four parts water to one part paint. After the paint wash was dry, I lightly sanded using 220 sanding pad with my SurfPrep sander on low speed. I just wanted to make sure the entire surface was smooth before adding topcoat. You may have guessed by now by looking at the picture, I did not achieve the ceruse look I was searching for, but instead got a beautiful white washed dresser. Although I did not get the actual look I wanted, I was very satisfied with the final result. But it turned out there was more. I wanted to remove these braces to make painting a little easier. After removing the pocket screws from one of the braces, it would not budge. So I decided to “loosen” it up a little with a hammer. The result was a cracked brace that I had to glue and repair; hence the clamp you see in the picture. Spraying Topcoat I let the tan wash dry for 24 hours and then started spraying the topcoat. I used Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane which is a water based product in a matte sheen. I applied three coats allowing each coat to dry a couple of hours before applying the next coat. I also sanded lightly with a 220 grit sanding block between coats. I let the final coat dry for 24 hours and then rubbed it all down with a piece of brown paper bag. This is probably the equivalent of using 1000 grit sandpaper. Every time I wiped it down, it drew out more and more of the red color of this piece. After I had sanded it completely down, I did another pass with Krud Kutter and this is what I got. I now realize this is going to be a problem and need to prime with a good stain blocking primer. After priming the entire piece, I did a light sanding with 220 grit to smooth out any imperfections. I then sprayed it using the Sherwin-Williams Origami White. I used my Graco TrueCoat 360 Variable Speed Sprayer. I used a setting of 5 (goes from 0-10) which seemed to work well with this paint. I sprayed two coats, letting it dry four hours between the first and second coat. I let the second coat dry 24 hours before starting to spray the topcoat, I used Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane which is water based. Even after testing my spray pattern, I had the sprayer set on too high of a setting and I had to deal with some runs on the sides which I had to brush out as they appeared. This was the first time I had sprayed polyurethane so lesson learned and now I know the correct setting to use the next time. I took this picture and used an app called Xylorix PocketWood that I found in the app store in an attempt to identify what kind of wood this chair was made of. It gave plenty of suggestions but the closest one was American Chestnut. If indeed this is made out of American Chestnut, that would probably mean this chair was made in the early 20th century or before as American Chestnut trees were devasted by a blight in the early to mid 20th century. These trees are now on the endangered list in the United States and Canada. We kind of liked it just sanded down and the lighter color. That got rid of dirt and such but did not get rid of the wax that may have been left on it. I should have gone over it with mineral spirits. My mistake. I then sanded the top down to bare wood using both my Dewalt orbital sander and my Surfprep sander. However I did not notice any wax residue on my sandpaper so there may not have been much wax left after several years.
